With a PhD from the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Timnit Gebru is research scientist at Google in the ethical AI team. She is the co-founder of Black in AI, which works to increase diversity and reduce racial bias in AI. She designed circuits and signal processing algorithms for the first iPad and studied algorithmic bias and the ethical implications underlying data mining at Microsoft Research’s Fairness Transparency Accountability and Ethics in AI (FATE) group.
Her work pertaining to data mining images to gain sociological insight and the computer vision problems that occur as a result have been discussed in The New York Times and The Economist.
